Episode 31: Abandoned

For what it's worth, I think this episode was hyped up way too much. We were told 3 weeks ago to hold onto our hat's: this is the big one! Well it wasn't. The episode focuses on the relationship between Sayid and Shannon. The two get busy in the tent and, when finished, Sayid goes to get a drink of water. Shortly after, Walt appears in the tent, speaking gibberish to Shannon. Some websites claim if you play the gibberish backwards he says "They're coming, and they're close." Sayid doesn't belief Shannon when she tells him of Walt and she runs out of the tent crying.

In the flashbacks we learn that Shannon's dad died in a car accident and, when she is in the hospital, Jack walks by her. We also learn that Shannon's step mother doesn't like her and cut's her off from all financial resources.

Shannon gives Vincent one of Walt's shirts to smell. He then takes off into the forest with Shannon in tow. At the same time, Ana and her posse are trying to find the "fronties" camp. The two groups collide in the forest with Ana thinking Shannon is one of the "Other's". She pulls her gun and shoots her in the chest.

Personally, I'm glad Sawyer didn't die. Not because I like him (I don't), but because it would be so obvious if he did. We knew someone was going to die; even a 5 year old could tell Sawyer was playing dodge ball witht he Grim Reaper. The writers know that the viewers demand twists and turns. Shannon getting killed was a pretty good twist. Ironically it is now Boone and Shannon that have been killed off from the show. When Sawyid saw what happened with Shannon he was visibly shocked; not just because of her being shot but because he can see the people from the raft standing in front of him. It's also interesting that Walt appeared to Shannon right before Ana and her posse, including Michael, meet up with her. Michael and Walt missed each other by seconds.
